The Rodway Herd

On 16th October Philip Arrell came to classify thirty-five heifers which averaged at Gp80 and eight cows, four that went excellent and four that were Vg.  We were very pleased with the classifications, especially with the heifers as they show great promise to improve into impressive cows.

Finally Rodway Reuben 56.25% semen is now available from Red Cattle Genetics.

Yet again another show triumph to end the year on.  And i would especially like to thank all the people that helped me at this years calf show; Cerys Crank (19, Champion Shorthorn Handler), Ellie Crank (15), Kayleigh Coole (19) Katie Morgan (14, Reserve Shorthorn Handler), Lucy Morgan (11), Hannah Morgan (8) and Thomas Morgan (5).  My handlers did a fantastic job and i was thrilled that they were rewarded in the showmanship classes, where they were up against steep competition.  Congratulations and again many thanks, without all of you i would not be able to turn out such a team.

This year we attended the Dairy Event with no expectations and we left very surprised and thrilled to have achieved what we did, as this September show is really the wrong time of year for our herd.

• Heifer In Milk:  Rodway Lady Laura 71st GP83 5th place by Rodway Rebel Prince  and Rodway Samanta 16th VG85 7th  by Wreay Red Duke out of Rodway Samanta 9th Ex91
• Junior Cow In Milk: Rodway Lisbet 2nd VG86, 2nd place winning best udder in the class.
• Senior Cow In Milk:  Rodway Red Rose 19th, a Ex92 nineth calver placed 2nd.

Rodway Lisbet 2nd later went on to be Reserve Champion Dairy Shorthorn with the Best Udder in the Breed.  A very pleasing result

I had a fantastic day on Saturday 12th September at Wettenhall Calf Show, the results are as follows

• Calf Born on or After 1st March 2009: 3rd place with Rodway Claribel 37th by Innisfail Prince of Diamonds out of Rodway Claribel 33rd VG86
• Calf Born between 1st December 2008 & 28th February 2009: 1st with Rodway Red Rose 38th by Llandovery Jinny’s Empire and 4th with Lady Barrington 29th by Innisfail Prince of Diamonds out of Lady Barrington 13th Ex9o
• Calf Born between 1st September & 31st December 2008: 4th with Rodway Rhoda 34th by Marleycote Maverick out of Rodway Rhoda 31st VG88
• Calf Born between 1st May & 31st August 2008:  1st with Rodway Fancy and 2nd with Rodway Samanta 18th
• Calf Born between 1st January and 30th April 2008: 1st with Rodway Lady Barrington 26th by Llandovery Jinny’s Empire

Rodway Fancy then went on to win the Shorthorn Championship and Interbreed Reserve Champion.   And Rodway Samanta 18th was Dairy Shorthorn Honourable Mention. A very successful show!

Cheshire Show is one of the strongest shows in the Dairy Shorthorns and this year the classes were no exception.

• Maiden Heifer: 4th with Rodway Fancy by Innisfail Prince of Diamonds out of a Danish Red VG87 cow.
• Cow In Calf: 3rd with Rodway Claribel 26th Ex90, carrying her seventh calf, by Kingsdale Libby’s Rebel.
• Heifer In Milk: 2nd place with Rodway Sonnschein 15th GP83 by Kingsdale Libby’s Rebel (pictured below)

• Junior Cow In Milk:  4th with Lisbet 2nd VG86, Ex90 mammery system second calver by Kingsdale Libby’s Rebel
• Senior Cow In Milk: 2nd with Rodway Marie 62nd VG88 having had 4 calves, also by Kingsdale Libby’s Rebel

In both the pair and group classes we were 2nd with our Kingsdale Libby’s Rebel daughters.  However on the second day we were delighted when we put forward Rodway Lisbet 2nd and Rodway Sonnschein 15th in the Interbreed Best Pair of Dairy Females and Interbreed Best Progeny Pair and were Reserve Champion in both classes, below the Holstein’s.

On day two of Cheshire show there is also the North Midland regional calf show in which we happily participated.  There are three classes and we stood 1st in the baby class with Rodway Lady Barrington 29th by Innisfail Prince of Diamonds. 4th in the Intermediate class with Rodway Red Rose 38th by Llandoverys Jinny’s Empire.  And in the Senior class we stood 2nd with Rodway Fancy and 3rd with Rodway Samanta 18th also an Innisfail Prince of Diamonds out of Rodway Samanta 9th Ex90.

Rodway Grey Rose 19th, Dairy Shorthorn Champion at this years Spring Show and Sale, makes the top bid of 2,480gns. This September 2005 second claver was kindly brought by Rob Kite, Stafford, as was our other milking consignment Rodway Lady Laura 70th selling for 1,810gns.

The sale also included a January born heifer calf, Rodway Marie 74th, which was generously donated by Graham to raise funds for a youth exchange programme. The heifer was brought by Clippaholics and is likely to appear at the summer shows this year.
